Sacro Monte and Sactuary of Oropa (40 km away) Originally founded by Saint Eusebio in the 4th Century in the amphitheatre of the Biella Alps, this devotional structure is one of the oldest medieval sanctuaries in Piedmont. Construction began in 1617 and lasted throughout the 17th Century, with the Basilica being completed in 1713. Dedicated to the miraculous Black Virgin Mary of Oropa, both the sanctuary and the Virgin have remained relatively untouched by the elements, and Her foot, although constantly touched by devotees who believe Her to perform miracles, has not worn.
As well as being a well-known place of pilgrimage, the Sacro Monte has been increasingly frequented (depending on the season) by hikers and skiers in the WWF Oasis. (www.santuariodioropa.it)
